Volume control broken?

im trying to get sound since i reinstalled windows and when i try and click volume control i get "there are no active mixers available. to install mixer devices go to control panel, click printers and other hardware and then click add hardware." but from there when i try to do that i get lost. and when i put my mic which im trying to use my comp doesnt recognize it. plz hlp ty :]
