Crossing over happens during prophase I of meiosis I. When the logous chromosomes line up side by side, the two inner chromatids are matched gene for gene. They exchange a segment in the process known as crossing over. The outer two chromatids are not affected. In this way, the outer two chromatids still have the gene combination that the parents had, and the inner two chromatids have a new combination.
