What was the "Red Scare" in the united states immediately following world war I?

C: the Red Scare was a growing paranoia of Communists and Communist spies in the U.S. WW1 brought Communist ideals to the US. In the 1920s, there were "fads" and it was "fashionable" to be a Communist. However, Communism was a perceived threat to the American democratic way of life. The result was the forerunner of the McCarthy era of the 1950s, where many, innocent lives were ruined on baseless accusations of being a Communist or spy for Russia.
