Can girls have a 'crush' on someone they don't know in middle school?

I'm pretty sure it's possible vice versa, but not too sure about other way around. I'm a boy, 14, 8th grade in middle school. I'm just kind of curious because it might just be me overreacting but I think i keep seeing this pretty girl shooting looks me and then looking away out of the corner of my eye. of course, I'm too shy to look at her. I think it might just because I turn around to talk to my friend behind me, but she doesn't seem like the shy type, she's not in my cles but she talks to a lot of boys in homeroom. So anyway, just curious.
